Understanding Flight Simulator Certification: EASA & FAA Levels Explained

Navigating the world of flight simulation hardware can be complex. Understanding the differences between Flight Training Devices (FTD) and Full Flight Simulators (FFS), along with their certification levels (like Level D), is crucial for choosing the right equipment for your training center.

1. Flight Training Devices (FTD)

  • Overview: FTDs are typically fixed-base devices used for procedural training.
  • Levels (EASA/FAA): Range from Level 4 to Level 7. Higher levels require more accurate aerodynamic modeling and cockpit replication.
  • Use Cases: Instrument rating, systems management, and checklist procedures.

2. Full Flight Simulators (FFS)

  • Overview: High-fidelity simulators with a motion platform (usually 6-DOF) and a visual system.
  • Level D (The Gold Standard): The highest level of certification. A Level D simulator replicates the aircraft so accurately that pilots can transition to the real jet with zero flight time in the actual aircraft (Zero Flight Time Training - ZFTT).
  • Motion & Visuals: Requires daylight visual systems and motion cues that match the aircraft's acceleration and handling characteristics perfectly.
"Investing in the right certification level ensures regulatory compliance and maximizes the credit hours your pilots can log in the simulator."

3. Choosing the Right Simulator

  • Training Goals: Do you need Type Rating training (FFS) or just MCC/JOC (FTD)?
  • Budget: FFS Level D is a significant investment compared to an FTD Level 5.
  • Regulatory Authority: Ensure the device meets the specific standards of your local authority (CAA, EASA, FAA).
